Workshop Description


Participants in Photography 101 will learn the basics of composition, lighting, and operating a digital camera in an open and friendly environment. Participants will have the opportunity to learn basic Photoshop skills such as re-sizing images, applying filters, and some image correction.


Point & shoot as well as single lens reflex digital cameras (pictured left) will be provided in addition to tripods, lights, backdrops, memory cards, and some photo paper. Participants are welcome to bring in their own cameras and equipment as well.


Tools: Nikon Digital SLR cameras, iPhoto software, Adobe Photoshop, studio lights & backdrops.

About the Instructor


Executive Director of Starting Artists, Marisa Catalina Casey, is an artist, administrator, and advocate who has worked almost exclusively in the nonprofit sector supporting a variety of constituents and causes from arts advocacy to child welfare to international development work. Marisa obtained her BA in Latin American Studies from Brown University and her MA in Arts Administration from Columbia University Teachers College. Utilizing her artistic and entrepreneurial skills, Marisa worked as a photojournalist for CARE-Peru, the Alliance for Children, and The Providence Journal. She has received grants for her photography from the Newton Cultural Council, Production Workshop, and Creative Arts Council. Marisa has taught film & digital photography, digital video, and graphic design to students of all ages at Brown University, The Sarah Doyle Women’s Center, Teen Ink, The Door: A Center for Alternatives, and at Starting Artists.
